Disease-Related Malnutrition and its Economic Impact in Hospitals in Spain

To calculate the costs of disease-related malnutrition in hospitals, researchers considered various factors that contribute to the overall cost of a patient's hospital stay. These factors include the cost of the bed, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), physicians' services, laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures, and drug costs.

The study aimed to compare the differences in costs between malnourished patients and non-malnourished patients. By analyzing these differences, researchers could assess the economic impact of disease-related malnutrition in hospitals.

Results of the Study on Disease-Related Malnutrition Costs in Hospitals:

The study found that malnourished patients incurred higher costs compared to non-malnourished patients during their hospital stay. The cost increase for malnourished patients ranged between 45% and 102%. The nutritional status of the patients accounted for most of this cost increase. The most significant difference in costs was observed between patients who maintained their nutritional status, whether well-nourished or malnourished, throughout their hospital stay.
