Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery in Johannesburg, South Africa

The mortality rate is more than double to European countries.

A clinical investigation was conducted by researchers from the Division of Cardiology, University of the Witwatersrand, Charlotte Maxeke in Johannesburg.

The investigation analysed patient records of 1218 consecutive individuals, of whom 951 (78.1%) were men, with an average age of 60.1 ± 10.1 years.

During the course of the study, 137 (11.2%) patients died from cardiac (49,8%) and sepsis-related causes (37,2%)

In this study, the crude perioperative mortality rate was 11.2%.

This rate was considerably higher than the perioperative mortality rates reported in other developed and developing countries. Based on the search results we found, the mortality rate after CABG surgery in various European countries ranged from 3.3% to 4.7%.
