Major Infections After Bypass Surgery

A Unique Five Year Long Randomised Study

A long term study was performed by the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, by M Mancone et Al.

The study reveals the long term outcomes for major infections after Bypass Surgery and Stenting. These numbers have never been reported in a large randomised trial over such a long term (5 years) observational period.

The aim of the study was to determine the long term prevalence of major infections and to assess the impact on mortality.

We are used to studies showing a 2-5% major infection rate after CABG over a time frame during hospitalisation and sometimes up to 30 days post-operatively.

But what happens when done over 5 years?

Results show a much higher number of major infections. 15,8% of CABG patients instead of 2-5%.

Major infections were independently associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality at five years.

Hence it is evermore important to prevent major infections.
